This program offers 9.5 Category I credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Target Audience: Physicians interested in pain management are encouraged to attend. Topics are also timely and relevant for primary care providers, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and dental professionals, rehabilitation professionals, social workers, physical therapists, psychologists, and other healthcare providers who have an interest in pain management.
Objectives: Healthcare practitioners who care for patients with acute or chronic pain should be knowledgeable about new advances in pain research and new therapies for the management of pain. Following this conference, participants should be able to:
• Describe the complex problems involved in prescribing opioids to patients with noncancer, chronic pain
• Explain the latest research and future directions in the development of topical anesthetics for cutaneous pain
• Describe the latest research on the mechanisms of cancer pain and how these new insights haveinfluenced the development of new therapeutic modalities
• Identify the services that can be provided to patients in the palliative care environment and how these services can improve quality of life
• Describe the typical presentation of patients with diabetic neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia and name the most effective current treatments for these two types of pain
• Identify the most common forms of acute headache pain and options for both immediate pain relief and prevention
• Name the issues that make opioid prescribing difficult, especially concerns regarding addiction and legal liability
• Describe the patient characteristics that can make opioid treatment for pain both difficult and potentially risky
• Identify the issues that have led to significant changes in the way that pain medicine is practiced today
• Describe the difficulties in taking promising new therapies and introducing them into pain medicine practice
• Identify the major radiographic features that can aid the pain practitioner in determining the source of back and neck pain
• Describe the ways in which a patient’s faith and spirituality can affect his experience of pain and loss
• Name the important issues that confront pain practitioners when caring for patients with chronic pain |
